The Problem
A client organization found that their development of electronic graphic
designs was significantly hampered by on-going proofing and production
related problems. Additionally, the "hand-off" to the commercial printer
was unreliable and frequently resulted in lost time. Too often expensive
production errors occurred and development time was sometimes unexpectedly
lengthened. Communications between vendor and client were frequently strained.
The Solution
A root cause analysis by The Poulton Consulting Group revealed significant
opportunities to improve the client's graphic file development process. To
address the situation, PCG designed a new graphic development process, initiated
supervisory controls, re-organized and standardized the client's graphic file
archive structure and trained staff on the improvements.
The Results
The new procedures were adopted by client staff with virtually no increase
in effort. Firm control was established over the department's development
process, resulting in the reduction of errors and improved service to the
firm's internal customers. Since graphic production files now consistently
adhered to industry standards, a 10-20% reduction in commercial print cost
(negotiated as part of a separate PCG project) was made possible. The client
also reports that staff performance and morale has noticeably improved due to
the new infrastructure.
